Decanter 97 points: "The 1997 is one of the modern-day icons from Martha's Vineyard, and only the second vintage to be produced after the 1993 replanting. A rich and complex bouquet of ripe black cherry, mint chocolate, cassis and mocha is the prelude to a plush, expansive palate with remarkable volume and intensity. The velvety quality of the tannins is particularly special. While this is certainly a ripe vintage, the Heitz team produced a wine with impeccable balance which is only just entering the beginning of its drinking window. Every time I encounter it, it seems better than the last."—WK (10/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90 points: "This wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as sweet tannin, and copious black currant fruit intermixed with soil undertones and licorice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, ripe, and nicely-textured with a long finish. Heitz Wine Cellars has followed their impressive 1996 with this equally splendid special commemorative cuvee honoring the late Joe Heitz. The famed minty/eucalyptus character found in older vintages of Martha's Vineyard is submerged by the depth of fruit possessed by the 1997. It will improve and age for 15+ years."  (6/2002)
